Recalculating… have you become too dependent on your navigation system?

I know this is way off my usual topic’s, but one that runs through my mind quite often due to where I live and work. Humor me while I get it out of my head.

Navigation systems have become pretty much akin to the internet to some people in which if it says this is the way I am suppose to go, it has to be true! The Ocean is reclaiming the cross street closest to me, in which a huge red “road closed” sign is attached to the chain preventing anyone from driving on it. There is also a sign at the entrance to the street stating this, as well as stating there is no turn around. However this does not seem to help….

Road Closed

Drivers are constantly coming to the sign, some even getting out and looking for a way through. We (my neighbor and I) wondered why no one seems to see the signs. This is the common response “oh but my GPS/Nav tells me to go this way”. Understand this has been in place nigh on 2 years now, but that does not stop the dozen + drivers from doing the turn around dance every day.

As I ponder this phenomena I cannot help but think how much these little gadgets become a lifeline to traveling about. They have their place for sure, but when does it cross the line and become something we listen to more then our environment? Is it that we do not want to be reprimanded by an electronic device? We do not want to hear the word “recalculating” directed at us like we are an idiot?
